Larry Bird threw in an off-balance 20-foot jump shot with two seconds to play in Boston. Phil Hubbard had just put Detroit ahead, 114-113. Eleven seconds remained when Hubbard took a pass from Isiah Thomas for a layup, then Boston called time and set up the winning play. Bird passed inbounds to Cedric Maxwell, got the ball back and, tightly guarded by Hubbard in the right corner, made the game-winning shot. That was the 23rd lead change of the game and completed a 25-point night for Bird.
